get the same few questions over and over again, so here's the answers.
If I've answered it here, them's the answers. I'm not holding anything
back. If I know otherwise, I'll post updates here, OK?
Q:
Is "Enter the Dragonfly" going to come out on Playstation
1? Or are the GBA games going to playable on an console?
A: Universal has not announced plans to do so, and doing so would
be a lot of work, given the very different technical specifications
of each.
Q:
Why don't you support the Game Boy Advance Spyro games?
A: I don't own a GBA and am not really in a big hurry to buy one.
Check the Spyro GBA section for links to
good walkthroughs and hints for the games.
Q:
Is there going to be a Spyro 5?
A: Good question. Unless "Enter the Dragonfly" is a big
flop (and maybe even then), it seems likely.
You'll know when we know!
Q:
Do the PS1 Spyro games work on Playstation 2?
A: Yes, they do. Make sure to use original Playstation memory cards,
though, for the Spyro games and all Playstation 1 games. All three Spyro
PS1 games look nice with the enhanced graphics mode turned on,
too.
Q:
I encountered a bug in "Spyro: Year of the Dragon" on one
of the speedway levels. Have you heard about this?
A: Yes. There is a bug in the first edition of the game. The good
news is that the bug is avoidable and that later versions of the game
were corrected. Detailed information on how to avoid the bug is available
here.
Q:
I encountered another bug in Spyro 3, in the Fireworks Factory level.
Have you heard about this one?
A: Yep. It only affects some people, and everyone can get around
it using (GASP!) a simple code posted on this site. Detailed information
from Insomniac's Brian Hastings is available here.
Q:
Can you send me all the information on _____?
A: No, sorry. If I know it, it's on the site. Sorry, but I'm now
getting over 1,000 visitors a day to this site (coooool!), and I get dozens
of e-mails. If I spent all my time e-mailing people what's already written
down, the site would go out of business because I'd get fired and be unable
to keep the site online. (Alternate answer: "No. Duh.")
Q:
How do you beat Tree Tops (in Spyro 1)?
A: With difficulty. And by looking on the Beast
Makers page in the Spyro 1 section.
There's three entries there on how to beat the level, with several alternate
takes on what is easily the hardest level in the Spyro series.
Q:
I can't find all the gems in Cliff Town (in Spyro 1).
A: Read the Peace Keepers page
in the Spyro 1 section.
(Please take the instructions literally. You did NOT enter the level through
the cliff dwellings.)
Q:
How do you get the last dragon that you can hear through a hole in the
ceiling in the Haunted Towers level (in Spyro 1)?
A: With great difficulty. This is all spelled out on the Dream
Weavers page in the Spyro 1 section.
Q:
How do you finish Metalhead's level in Spyro 1?
A: Be an explorer. Read the Beast Makers
page in the Spyro 1 section.
Q:
Hey, my copy of Spyro 2 is broken. I finished the whole game, but I'm
missing one orb and 400 gems.
A:
You missed a speedway level. (And how
arrogant is it to assume that you're perfect, but the programmers must
have screwed up? Yeesh. You don't think they played the game all the way
through? How rude.)
Q:
The answer on your site about Tree Tops/Cliff Town/Haunted Towers doesn't
work!
A: Yes, it does. Don't assume the hints are mistaken and do something
different than what is written. (This is especially meant for those stuck
in Haunted Towers who assume when I wrote "turn left" I meant
"right.")
Q:
Does Spyro 2 have two different names?
A: Yep. In the United States and Canada, the game is called "Spyro
2: Ripto's Rage." Elsewhere around the world, it's called "Spyro
2: Gateway to Glimmer." The games have different covers, even. "Ripto's
Rage" can be seen in our shop, while
the cover to "Gateway to Glimmer" can be seen to the right.
(Thanks to Zoe Kind for sending that in!) The name"Ripto," incidentally,
is what the Insomniac team thought "Spyro," written in Japanese,
looked like. They got used to saying the name "Ripto," and decided
to incorporate it into the sequel to "Spyro the Dragon."
Q:
Why does Spyro 2 have two different names?
A: Just 'cause. Michael John of Cerny Games told us it "was
just a marketing decision made by Sony Europe. No trademark violations
or anything sinister ... they just liked the name better and it didn't
bother us any." The games are identical. Do not buy the version
not commonly available in your area expecting it to work properly on your
Playstation. It won't.
Q:
Do you have cheat codes?
A: Yes. There are codes up right now for Spyro
1, Spyro 2 and Spyro
3 codes. I won't post Game Shark codes, though, sorry.
Q:
Why won't you post Game Shark codes?
A: Game Shark is lame.
Q:
I can't do ___________, even though I'm following your hints. Is my
game broken (I used Game Shark/cheat codes/played Frisbee with my
Spyro disk)?
A:
Probably not. First off, be nicer to your game disks. Secondly, make SURE
you're following the hints exactly (no one said Tree Tops would be easy,
even if you do know how to do it, technically speaking). Thirdly, I find
most technical problems with these games (and Playstation games in general)
can be fixed by turning the machine off, removing any non-Playstation-made
controllers (yes, they're more comfortable and often have neat goodies
like turbo mode) and using the factory original ones/other Sony-made controllers.
Restart the game and you should be fine. (For whatever reason, aftermarket
controllers and memory cards have the tendency to make your Playstation
go kablooey eventually. Not cool at all.) Finally, enough with the Game
Shark, ya big wimps.
Q:
Is there a Spyro stuffed animal or action figure available?
A: Yes and no. At the moment, there's nothing available in stores,
but people in America and Great Britain have reported finding Spyro toys
at amusement parks and carnivals. Prototypes have even been made of Spyro
stuffed animals, some of which sit in Insomniac's Los Angeles offices,
which are the photos you see on this page. (The Spyro toys in these photos
are wearing Insomniac baseball hats turned around backwards.)
There
was a Spyro stuffed animal given out as the under-3-years-old toy at Taco
Bell in January of 2001. Since they weren't listed on the sign displaying
the other two Spyro toys (a wing-flapping Spyro and a glow-in-the-dark
Sparx thingy), they weren't bought up by a lot of Spyro fans, so you may
have to do a lot of searching on eBay to find it. (It's the best of the
three mini-toys they produced, though.)
Q:
Why doesn't Universal Interactive approve more toys?
A: Nobody knows. Baffling, isn't it? In 2001 and 2002, Taco Bell
has had Spyro toys in their kids meals, though, and you will periodically
find some in gumball machines or other places, so there are some out there.
Q:
What's the deal with your Amazon Associate links in the shop? Are
you making a profit off this site?
A: Far from it. This site sucks up enormous bandwidth year-round,
and the expense of running it in the holiday season (when new Spyro games
are released and many more are purchased) has been closed to shutting
this site down several times. The money generated through the Associate
program pays a portion of those costs. And everything on the site
is still free -- you don't need to shop at Amazon if you don't want to.
Q:
What's the font you use for the SpyroHints.com logo? Is that the
Harry Potter font?
A:
Sharp eyes! It's actually a shareware font inspired by the Harry Potter
logos. It's called Lumos, and you can download a ZIP file of it here.
Q:
You must think I'm stupid.
A: Not at all. I wouldn't have created this site if I was some
sort of game guru who never needed any help.
Q:
You must think it's weird for someone my age to like Spyro.
A: Nope. I'm in my early 30s, my wife is in her 20s, and we literally
get e-mail from people ages 8 to 80. There are grandparents who got a
Playstation and the games for their grandchildren only to discover they
were addicted to the games themselves, and there are adults with no kids
who own nothing but the Spyro series and love them to death. Somehow,
people of all ages and all walks of life have discovered the games, which
I think speaks to the bang-up job done on them by Insomniac.
Q:
You must be GREAT at these games!
A: HAHAHAHAHA! Whew! I wish! No, my wife gets infuriated watching
me play. While she tears through levels at high speed and is the absolute
queen of levels like Tree Tops or Speedway Levels, I'm an absolute klutz
on those, and she typically has to wrench the controller from my hands
in disgust and do them for me. Having said that, I'm a nut for the detailed
worlds Spyro roams, and while I'm doing something "useless"
like sitting enjoying the subtle interplay of background sounds and environmental
effects like falling rain or so on, I also manage to find every hidden
nook and cranny of the game. So, yes, together we're a great team.
Q:
Are you obsessed with dragons or these games?
A: Nope. I built the original site the week I got Spyro 1 (which,
I believe, was the second week it was out) for the dastardly purpose of
helping me get hints in the Peace Makers world. And once I'd gotten the
site all finished, it seemed only natural to keeping it going for the
sequels. Once it grew to its current proportions, I decided the site might
as well have its own URL and a new, more unified look.
